Welcome to the Lori Wray Page

-- a small tribute to our all-time favorite musical gem of the Twin Cities; Lori Wray.

A native Kansan, Lori made her first appearance on vinyl with The Von Bulows (AKA the Pedaljets ) recording "Summer Song" on the 1986 compilation album " Fresh Sounds From Middle America #3".

Ready for new adventures in the hometown of the Replacements and Husker Du, Lori made Minneapolis her home starting in the late 80's. In her solo efforts and as a member of various groups Lori made a memorable contribution to the local music scene.

Following her arrival in the Twin Cities Lori soon found friends in the music scene, many of whom became collaborators. Throughout that time she made frequent appearances at various twin cities locales backed by groups such as the legendary 27 Various who re-assembled in 2002 for the release of Lori's Hisstory CD. Lori also appeared frequently as a songwriting member of the Roadshow and teamed with longtime collaborator Todd Newman, formerly of the Leatherwoods.

The 2000 release of "Hisstory" --- a compilation of Lori's musical work with various collaborators --- was a happy surprise. Remastered from a sundry collection of tape recordings (hence the name Hiss-tory), Lori's second CD combines a varied and impressive selection of original songwriting and artful collaborations with a few covers and more than a few surprises. A fine addition to her previous 1998 CD, "Safely Crass".

Lori's involvement in Minnesota music continued from afar when she returned to her hometown of Lawrence (such as with her vocals on the Autumn Leaves CD "The Twilight Hours of the Autumn Leaves"). No matter what the arrangement and whatever musical accompaniment she had, Lori was a wonderfully consistent and subtle singer with the voice and writing skills to deliver expressive and genuine music.

    SAFELY CRASS

An adventurous ten song CD release from 1997, produced by Mike Merz, "Safely Crass" offered a variety of songstyles and chance-taking experimentation commencing with the bristly romping opener "Walking Tall" and continuing to the ambitious concoction of "Zsa Zsa Stole the Apple" which ends the collection. All the songs between are potent as well, with "When I'm Weakening", "Prisoner" and "Diva Devasted" especially standing out.

Along with nuanced writing that merits the CD's accompanying lyric sheet, the great sounds on these tracks & others make repeat listens yield new detail. Obviously some long-confined ideas were given release during the sessions for this record.
